The expansion of the MRB Woodshop has led to a new address off Creighton St in Halifax's North End. Before we begin transforming this place, MRB took advantage of the open space and brought in the team for Friday night floor hockey! We will keep you posted with updates and photos as the relocation and creation of the new MRB Woodshop unfolds. Mike and the office team will continue their work at our James Street address, but what will become of the James St shop? Even the shop dogs came by to checkout what all the talk has been about! ...

06 Aug Ironstone: interior details

The Ironstone project is nearly complete. The guys have been busy adding interior details - closets, floor and door trim, doors, and other finish details. The kitchen is starting to be installed. You'll notice the brown paper covering the floors. Beneath that paper lay heated concrete floors. The main floor unit will be available for rent starting September 1. If you are interested please contact Lindsay at  902.455.3202. The floor trim features 10" baseboards for a hearty feel. All seams and fastener holes are patched. The walls and trim will all be the same colour, unifying the space in a minimalist manner. Brian expertly routes the hinge placements on the solid core doors and door jams. Hanging doors is a bit of an art and requires lots of focus. Custom shelves in the bedroom closets provide intuitive storage options. In the kitchen Tom created custom cabinet boxes from melamine. The doors will be a combination of raw Baltic birch with matching grain and high gloss laminate doors.  The lower unit has an opening on the top of the wall between the living area and bedroom allowing the afternoon southern sun to filter throughout the space. ...

13 Jun Walnut cabinet fabrication

Tom's been busy building some walnut veneer cabinets for a special project. As you can see in the photos below there are a whole heap of layers here that will eventually come together to make the boxes and doors for the cabinets. = In the detail below you can see how Tom added a hardwood strip to the edge of the ply doors. Then he uses a router to trim the edges flush with the door. From here on it's a lot of meticulous sanding. It's just bananas. ...

01 Apr Baltic birch kitchen: Kingsburg 1

So far we've showcased the exterior of the Kingsburg projects. Today we wanted to show you a little from the kitchen and one of the bedrooms. Our cabinetmaker executed the architects cabinet designs using a mix of melamine and Baltic birch plywood. The matched end-grain detail is flawless and gives these custom cabinets a refined finish.   Below is a short sequence that shows the cabinets before the Caesar Stone and glass tile back splash installation. Pine was used for flooring. The colours of the pine pop once they are sanded and finished.   The photo below is one of the living area ceiling. Two large north west facing windows provide lots of natural light late into the afternoon.   The master bedroom also graces Baltic birch cabinets built in-house.   Stay tuned for more interior photos of Kingsburg....

28 Jan Monday’s field notes

Last week was beautiful with clear skies and amazing light. With the clear skies came cold weather. Air temps hovered below -10 C. for the entire week. Cold enough that some of the more sheltered bays around Kingsburg were frozen. It's strange to see a frozen briny ocean. It even seemed as if the tides had stopped affecting the shoreline along the bay roads. We spent the week working mostly on Kingsburg 1 - finishing off the Cape Cod siding and installing the skirting and decks. The place is coming together nicely. The drywall crew braved icy roads and finished up their side of things not without their own challenges from the cold.       The James Street portfolio had a few photo additions. The kitchens were fitted with modern minimalist Baltic birch cabinets. Concrete floors in the kitchen give way to beautiful hardwood floors throughout the rest of the space.   Hope you enjoyed the first on our Team Profile series featuring Mike Burns. Keep an eye for a new profile on Thursday. And as always, thanks for stopping by!...

15 Nov Photo roudup

We could lament the rain. The truth however is that it's been a great week so far. While getting up before sunrise to make the trek to Kingsburg can feel daunting, sometimes watching the sun rise over country roads has its benefits. This week we received some photos of an Oxford Street deck we did a few months ago. We'll be adding a portfolio entry for this project soon. Here are a couple of shots to get excited about. And of course here we have our man Chester. Dapper and always alert for deer and squirrels. Architect Omar Gandhi sent us a couple of shots from living room renovation project he executed with MRB Woodshop. Stay tuned for a project portfolio. Down in Kingsburg the beginning of the week offered some amazing late Fall sunshine. The top of the bunkhouse offered an extra special vantage point for the guys as they worked on the parapet. The drive home from Kingsburg. On this evening we could feel the approaching storm in the air. Thanks for reading....

Trunk Studio, MRB Woodshop

29 Oct Trunk Studio Profile with designer Jess Tasker

MRB Woodshop recently collaborated with a Halifax furniture designer to build a line of chairs. Jess Tasker is the founder of Trunk Studio, a furniture design firm focused on creating unique and classically Canadian inspired furnishings. Here is a short profile about Jess, her design inspirations and Trunk Studio. Can you tell us a little about yourself and Trunk Studio? I grew up attending an arts school as a kid and later minored in art (and rugby) at St.FX. I have always had a strong sense of design and a love of furniture. Dwell and House & Home can always be found on my bedside table. I worked in carpentry for a couple of years which made the daunting task of designing functional furniture more achievable. Having some idea of how to put pieces together helps me when I am designing. What was your design inspiration for the Station Chair? The inspiration for The Station Chair came from a combination of things. First, I love the simplicity of the Danish Modern furniture style. Secondly, I wanted to create a line with a Canadian identity. If you look at the chair you can see echoes of an Adirondack chair (or as we native Ontarians call...

22 Oct Woodshop: cabinet doors

Friday was a focused day inside the MRB Woodshop. Tom and Brian each had their ear and eye protection on while their machines whirred and purred in syncopation. Chisels scraped and sanding blocks smoothed, blending birch and walnut pieces to form fluid minimalist shapes. Like artists at work, the Woodshop crew worked with a dedicated intentionality to produce something that's not been made before. These guys barely looked up from their work as we photographed the progress. These doors are the final touch for a project we mentioned in a recent post. The cabinets make up an impressive installation in a West Halifax living room that will be transformed from a mostly uninspiring place, to a library and acoustically correct sitting area. Below is a sequence illustrating some of processes in finishing a door. Tom's idea of perfection is above average. Stay tuned for photos of the finished installation. ...

04 Oct Wow. What a week.

What a great week we've had. From North End Halifax, to Halifax's West End, and down to Kingsburg, the team has been making great strides. Andrew and Ricardo finished installing the Cape Cod siding on our North End project. This 1890's home has had a massive makeover. North End Halifax has been undergoing urban renewal in recent years and we're happy to modernize the movement.     In Kingsburg, Nova Scotia, Smitty, Scott and Rob have been busy building walls at Kingsburg  1. These two photos hardly do justice to their progress. It's a good thing that the framing is moving along, October is here and soon the wind will turn cold. Those walls will come in handy as the guys move inside to work.   And finally,  a peek into a cool new project that Tom's  been working on in the Wood Shop. Here Tom is leveling the bottom row of custom crafted Baltic Burch cabinets that make up a small part of an updated living room in Halifax's West End. We'd tell you more about it but we like surprises.   ...
