22 Oct Merkel Street | new project

Our man Scottie has been assigned to oversee our latest renovation on Merkel Street. Set in Halifax north end, just minutes from the Hydrostone, this 70 something year old home will be getting a full MRB makeover. Before building could commence, Scottie made arrangements for an existing addition (probably around 20 years old) to be removed. All electrical from the back of the house had to be deleted, and some relief cuts made to allow us to remove the addition without disturbing the original home. The excavator and it's claw made short work of demolishing the old to make room for the new. ...

I love North End

25 Nov A roundabout Kudos

No doubt you've seen the round works at the North Park intersection? With high traffic incidences, collisions and ageing infrastructure, the upgrade and improvement of this intersection was well due. Projects of this scale require enormous design and planning to be a success. With so many considerations; -Design and drawing -Engineering -Timeline -Budget To name just a few. Communication and cooperation are also paramount. Congratulations to the civil contractor on this project. The major tasks were completed quickly and efficiently, the timeline was adhered to, and the disturbance to our North End neighbours has been kept to a minimum. It's exciting to watch our neighbourhood grow. The fabric of the neighbourhoods surrounding North Park Street and the Halifax Common is changing. You can see the planned projects moving this change on the HALIFAX website using the links. Peninsula Bikeway Network (north/south), Cogswell Interchange, Open Space Plan, Halifax North Common Plan, Corridor Plan, etc. ...

This addition will house a modern mudroom, new kitchen and dining areas, to compliment this gorgeous century old home. With framing complete it's now that we utilise many of the advanced building techniques and tools available to us. As you can see in the photos, there are many procedures that have become common practise in modern building. Vaproshield envelops the addition before the cladding; and the basement is sprayed with a blue foam insulation in preparation for the concrete pour. Both these steps contribute to the additions energy efficiency and overall owner comfort!  ...

Peak Audio

13 Nov Peak Audio | do you remember when?

After passing scissor lift training with flying colours, Scottie and his team have begun work at our North End neighbour Peak Audio. Established here for over 25 years, Peak Audio has employed our expertise to perform this cosmetic facelift. As the team removed the dated vinyl siding in preparation for the updated corrugated iron cladding they revealed some of this buildings interesting history. Fabulous vintage signage have us guessing that this store was home to the local Pharmacy sometime in the 50-60's, and prior to then a Bakery. Perhaps the 40's. Maybe you or someone you know remembers?   ...

Gottingen North End Renovation

23 Oct Gottingen St | Old Meets New

With the demolition of the unwanted add-on and concrete foundations now all complete, the MRB team have shifted their focus to the 'improvements and renovations.' This beautiful Victorian North End home still boasts many features dating back from its original construction in the 1870's. Ornate plaster mouldings and archways, high baseboards, wide flooring and stunning cedar shingles have all stood the test of time. Joined on site by Jonathon; Steevo will be using his experience, knowledge and fine craftsmanship to preserve these heritage features. Utilising modern building enclosure design and technology, along with traditional cedar shingles will ensure energy efficiency and comfort, without altering the overall appearance. Replica external dentil and mouldings will be carefully crafted to adorn the home. ...

Gottingen Renovation

02 Oct Gottingen St | new project

Our renovation expert 'Steevo' and his team have commenced work on a gorgeous old home in Halifaxs 'North End.' Before they get started on the list of improvements and upgrades that will be done, the team peel back the layers of this home and remove the old 'add-on' to reveal what's beneath. It's no surprise for Steevo to find the old homes kitchen not bearing on the foundation at all, with nothing but dirt below and hence rotting sills. So, first priority tasks are: build temporary beam supports to prop up the 2nd floor while the 1st floor structure is removed, followed by preparation and installation of concrete foundation walls to support new structure. ...
