By the time this project is crafted and completed the interior will be cosy and comfortable, and the exterior will look like new. Nice job Scottie! ...

23 Jan Purcells Cove Rd | Wrapping it up

Wrap, Strap, and Insulate! With Jack Frost nipping at their noses, Corey and the team are working hard as nails, bound and determined to seal up the house. Protecting themselves from the elements sure helps to keep the build progress rapidly:) A protective membrane 'Firestone V-force' adheres to the roof to provide temporary weather protection, allowing work to continue below. Permanent stages of spray foam insulation have commenced under the buildings eaves. This expanding foam application will provide thermal insulation and minimise air infiltration. The team have also begun the important step to wrap the building in WrapShield as they install windows. We are well on the way to having things at Purcells Cove weathertight and secure! ...

18 Nov Gottingen St |Progress

This addition will house a modern mudroom, new kitchen and dining areas, to compliment this gorgeous century old home. With framing complete it's now that we utilise many of the advanced building techniques and tools available to us. As you can see in the photos, there are many procedures that have become common practise in modern building. Vaproshield envelops the addition before the cladding; and the basement is sprayed with a blue foam insulation in preparation for the concrete pour. Both these steps contribute to the additions energy efficiency and overall owner comfort!  ...

17 Apr MRB Procedures | windows

MRB has strict procedures and applications for the procurement of materials we choose and craftsmanship we employ. Whether its from the ground up, or a renovation of an existing dwelling, it is our focus to ensure exceptional quality and standards are maintained. Every 2nd Friday the MRB team convene in the woodshop to fine tune and reaffirm the implementation of these processes and procedures. This week Smitty took the stage with a demonstration of the MRB procedures for window installation. The images below demonstrate a brief play by play of our procedure: Keeping in mind the biggest consideration is penetration of wind and water . 1. Walls are wrapped in WRAPSHIELD IT - a breathable, water resistant membrane 2. Strapping is nailed around the window opening 3. Another great Vaproshield product, is Vaproshield SA  (self adhesive). This seals the Vaproshied IT wrap and strapping to the building, thus eliminating water and wind penetration. 4. Next we apply Liqui-Flash and a bead of Dow around the opening before fitting the window in place. 5. Then comes flashing. 6. Voila! Ready for cladding. ...

Just as well!- as the team bravely continue work outdoors through ongoing Halifax wintry weather and sub zero temperatures. The team have added strapping around the exterior of the building in readiness for cladding. Windows are temporarily covered to allow access for sub trades to make a start. Plumbers have roughed in, and electricians were on site yesterday. Full steam ahead and bring on spring! ...

14 Nov Amos Wood | updates from Agricola St.

Back to business as usual. This time with some updates on our Agricola St. project for Amos Wood. In the last blog about Amos Wood the guys had begun interior framing. As you can see from the photos below lots has happened since. Fresh concrete meets ancient stone wall in the basement by the front entry. What's not to love about this unplanned aesthetic amalgamation. Spanking new plywood sheathing on the rear wall. Plywood is our material of choice for all sheathing applications for various reasons (check out our Plywood vs. OSB post). Photos often don't show how big things really are. Take this back door for example - it's about 9' x 9'. It seems like all of a sudden it's cold and the days are as short as they get. Nothing a set of industrial string lights and hot coffee can't remedy. As always, thanks for reading! Feel free to drop as an email or leave a comment....
