10 Jul Purcells Cove Rd | taking shape

Given the enormity of this new construction we're not quite ready to say we're on the homestretch, but we are definitely seeing the light! Our full focus is on craftsmanship and attention to detail and we are really beginning to see the fruits of our labour. With the pending arrival of painters on Monday, the drywallers are finishing up. Electricians will also be back. Outside work is taking shape with landscape features that help settle this build back in to the surrounds. Stunning architectural design cladding continues in the soffit and drive through of the home. Every aspect as important as another. Corey and the team enjoy the beautiful summer days as they head for home! ...

17 Jun Purcells Cove Rd | update

Like a beehive this build is constantly abuzz with activity. Indoors the drywall is hung ready to be taped, the floors are finished (details to come!), and the call has gone out for our sub-trades to come back to finish what they started. Outdoors has been equally as industrious. The septic field is in, landscape has commenced and the final stages of this homes contemporary cladding are being completed. The coordination and organisation involved in pulling everything together over the coming weeks will keep Corey and the team on their toes. And squeezing in a weekend in Florida to catch Game 5, how does he do it? ...

12 May Purcells Cove | Cladding

It's all about cladding at our Purcells build. Corey has had the team meticulously placing and fixing the final layers on the exterior. Innovative, modern, contemporary materials demand utmost care and dexterity. Each requiring specific application. There are three different materials that finish this architectural residence and give it a formal, rigid appearance. Cembrit - on the ground level. Corrugated Aluminium - on both 2nd and 3rd levels. Wood - Maibec will fill the spaces around the windows. ...

11 Feb Purcells Cove Rd | Windows to the sky

Corey and the team on our 'Stereovision' build are on task following MRB procedures installing windows. As with any window installation, the prevention of wind and water penetration is of utmost importance. Keeping in mind this builds amazing location and it's exposure to the elements the team adhere meticulously to our step by step procedure to ensure success. The windows in this design command our craftsmanship as they highlight and frame the amazing vistas of Purcells Cove and the stunning ocean beyond. "A beacon high atop a hillside".   ...

29 Jan Green Roof | did you know?

We briefly looked at installation of a Green Roof in August 2014 at our Clifton St home. As preparations for the installation of a green roof begin at our Purcells Cove build here's some interesting facts you perhaps didn't already know. A green roof or living roof is a roof of a building that is partially or completely covered with vegetation and a growing medium, planted over a waterproofing membrane. - Green Roofs are not new! Green Roofs have been around in Scandinavia for centuries, and a superb reconstruction of Norse living can be seen at L'Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland. - Environmentally smart; reduce heating and cooling costs, reduce storm water runoff, filter pollutants and carbon dioxide out of the air, the list goes on. - The green roof acts as a shield to protect the roof membrane from the elements and therefore extends the roof lifespan by at least 200% - Green roofs can provide living space for not only plants but also local animals too! Pretty Bird. Pictures of what will be green roof at Purcells Cove ...

16 Dec Purcells Cove Rd | 2nd floor framing

On our last visit with Corey at Purcells Cove we saw him finishing and straightening the framing on the first floor. The pictures do most the talking; After crafting the massive 60ft LVL's at ground level, in came the crane to lift these one tonne beasts onto the second floor. The team promptly laid the floor and late last week with a gathering of MRB teammates the 2nd floor grew walls! ...

06 Nov Purcells Cove | framing

I love doing updates on the work sites in their early stages of construction. As walls go up and floors go down the building form drastically changes and begins to take shape. Corey and the team at Purcells Cove have the first floor down, and have started framing. As the frame goes up it helps you to visualise how this build will sit in the landscape. It also gives you an idea of the complexity of the structure and support this architecturally designed home requires. Like the bones beneath its skin! ...

07 Oct Purcells Cove Rd | watching the ships roll in

With MRB foreman 'Corey' at the helm, it's full steam ahead on our Omar Gandhi 'Stereovision' design on Purcells Cove Rd. Stunning northerly views to the opening of Halifax Harbour, Point Pleasant Park, and McNabs Island, will be one of this homes many features. As usual, right from the start, MRB have invested time in preparing this amazing site in readiness. The sizable build will sit on two already completed foundations. Pictures below show Corey and the team from RKO steel setting two 16 inch thick 'I' beams in place. These beams span between the two foundations and will pick up the weight load of first floor and wall loads above. Trenches were dug and lined with concrete casement to house the power lines in the from road and out of sight. Follow us on this project, and for a sneak peak of Omar's vision check out his website 'Stereovision' ...

25 Mar Purcells Cove Road | new project

From start to finish, we love to take care of everything! Before construction even commences on this site in Purcells Cove the MRB team are there. This build is located on the apex of a massive hill and so first job is to give ourselves safe and easy access. We employed some big machines to get to work. The existing rough road required compacting and an additional topping of stone to ensure a good solid base driveway for material delivery and concrete trucks. All that's left to do before the eager team  can start construction  is to bring in power. Some power poles will be put in place at the top of the driveway. As we begin to see traffic on this driveway, we will be thankful we invested the time and energy now. Perhaps the most unique MRB build to date, I recommend you stay tuned for updates as this fantastic house project unfolds! ...
